My Position on the Political Spectrum
Staying Sovereign
The quote "...over one's mind and over one's body the individual is sovereign..." by John Stuart Mill, a 19th Century Philosopher, conveys his interesting intake on liberal ideology. The main focus of this quote, is that an individual should be self-governing. They are able to express their opinions without coercion . As an individual living in a democratic society, one should have no intervention on their political views in such a way that they are forced into believing something. An individual has the freedom to act on their own free will as they please. I assume that John Stuart Mill was a liberal in his views, based on this quote. Some of his other famous quotes, that include "Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives," also lead me to believe that he is a liberal. He illustrates the idea of an individual staying true to oneself. John believes in the freedom of choice. This coils in with the more modern debate on abortion, If john Stuart Mill were still alive he would be pro-choice of abortion. He feels that an individual should choose their life, or at least have some control.
